Perhaps Warriors Are the Ones Who Lack Maturity

Share

Rony Seikaly, who spent two gloomy years with the Golden State Warriors before demanding a trade, said he expected to hear boos when he returned to the Bay Area with the Orlando Magic, but he wasn’t prepared for what his former team had in mind.

The Warriors staged a “Baby Seikaly” skit during a timeout, their mascot wearing a Seikaly jersey as he crawled toward a giant feeding bottle. The “baby” then was locked in a box and thrown into a dumpster.

Neither the crowd nor Seikaly responded to the bit with even a shred of applause in the eerily silent arena.

Trivia time: Which baseball player received the highest percentage of votes to enter the Hall of Fame?

That’s serious: For the first time in 14 years, King executive and former goaltending star Rogie Vachon recently put on his skates and pads to face some flying pucks at the Forum, preparing for part of the Kings’ 30th anniversary Saturday night when an alumni team will face a team of celebrities.

“I’ve cut down from two martinis a day to one,” Vachon said of his training regime.

Fair warning: Patrick Ewing wants an NBA championship ring, but more than that he wants it at the expense of Michael Jordan.

“I told Michael, when I win my championship for him to be there,” the New York Knick center said. “I don’t want anybody to say, ‘Well, you won it when Michael wasn’t here.’ So I want him to be here so that everybody knows that I kicked his [butt].”

Add Ewing: There is also the haunting memory of the NCAA final round 15 years ago when freshman Jordan hit a last-second shot that gave North Carolina the championship over Ewing and Georgetown.

Long, long John: Tiger Woods is long off the tee, but don’t believe the propaganda that he’s longer than John Daly. Daly leads the tour in driving distance at 309.8 yards, which is 20.1 yards per hit longer than Woods.

Each of Daly’s balls is stamped with a red “00” and features the Arkansas Razorback with the word “Kill.”

Racing logic: Mel Stute, who trains Funontherun, thinks he has his best Kentucky Derby shot yet. Better than with Bold ‘N Rulling, who led briefly in 1980, or with Snow Chief, the 1986 Derby favorite?

“They both lost,” Stute explained.

Straight talk: Duane Thomas was never afraid to say what he felt when he was a Dallas Cowboy running back. He once referred to Cowboy President Tex Schramm as “a liar, a thief and a crook.”

To which Schramm responded: “Two out of three ain’t bad.”

Trivia answer: Tom Seaver, 98.84%.

And finally: The Portland Trail Blazers’ Isiah Rider was asked to explain how P.J. Carlesimo has created a better team atmosphere. His reply:

“So much of the season I was discouraged. Then I had a talk with P.J. and it got better. Now we’re all discouraged together.”

Got it?
