Maceo Baston scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half Thursday night in Michigan’s 76-63 first-round NIT victory over Miami in Ann Arbor.

It was about the only good thing that has happened to the Wolverines all week.

Earlier in the day, the Detroit Free Press quoted anonymous sources as saying a Detroit booster, Ed Martin, has given money to Michigan (20-11) players for years. That followed a report questioning forward Robert Traylor and his aunt leasing a $47,906 vehicle.

And there was not getting an NCAA bid on Sunday.

Michigan Coach Steve Fisher said the distractions affected him more than his players.

“We did what we always do and told our kids ‘control what you can,’ ” said Fisher, who reportedly stopped Martin from renting an apartment for a player and buying plane tickets for players’ relatives.

In another NIT game, Oklahoma State beat Tulane, 79-72, and Hawaii was a 71-61 winner over Oregon in a late Wednesday game in Honolulu.
