Dominguez Runs Past Woodbridge

There was no way that defending state Division II champion Compton Dominguez was going to let any team come into its gym and run it out of the state playoffs.

Irvine Woodbridge quickly discovered that during a 83-65 loss to Dominguez Thursday night in the Southern Regional semifinals at Dominguez High.

Dominguez (27-5) got 10 points and six rebounds in the first quarter from forward Tayshaun Prince in running off to a 22-13 lead. The Dons made 10 of 14 first-quarter shots, including Prince’s two three-point baskets.

Even with Kenny Brunner, who scored 11 points, in foul trouble, Dominguez was dominant. The Dons took a 44-25 halftime lead, making 18 of 31 shots and outrebounding Woodbridge, 14-10.

Chris Burgess, who signed a letter of intent with Duke, had 23 points to lead Woodbridge (28-4).

Juniors Jason Thomas and Prince each scored 21 points for Dominguez, which advances to the state regional final Saturday at the Pond of Anaheim at 3 p.m. against Oceanside El Camino, a 93-76 winner over Bakersfield Highland.--PAUL McLEOD

Santa Ana Mater Dei 79, Westchester 72--In a Division I semifinal game, point guard Kevin Augustine, who signed early with USC, scored 26 points to lead the Monarchs (32-2) at Ocean View High.

Tony Bland scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Comets (25-7).

Trailing by five points at halftime, the Monarchs outscored Westchester, 17-7, in the third quarter to take a 54-49 lead.

Crenshaw 94, Clovis West 77--Taking a 49-22 lead at halftime, the defending state Division I champion Cougars (25-3) cruised to a Division I semifinal victory at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Shooting guard Bryan Reed and point guard Kevin Bradley each scored 20 points to lead the Cougars. Bradley also had nine assists. Crenshaw guard Alastair Faux, who played with a sore right wrist, scored 15 points.

Joe Aiello scored 25 points to lead Clovis West (25-7). Grady Wilburn scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half for the Golden Eagles, who outscored Crenshaw, 55-45, in the second half.

Harvard-Westlake 66, Tehachapi 35--Sparked by guard Ryan Smiley’s 14 points in the third quarter, the Wolverines overcame a sluggish start in a Division III semifinal game at Harvard-Westlake.

The Wolverines (34-1), the state’s top-ranked team, were also led by 6-foot-10 twins Jarron Collins and Jason Collins who combined for 22 points and 22 rebounds. They have signed with Stanford.

Tehachapi (22-4), with all of its starters back from last year, lost only three times since losing to the Wolverines, 81-42, in last year’s Southern California Regional opener.

Santa Monica Crossroads 63, Santa Fe Springs St. Paul 45--Crossroads point guard Baron Davis had 37 points, seven assists and five rebounds to lead the Roadrunners (29-3) in a Division IV semifinal game at Loyola Marymount.

Davis also had four steals and three blocks. He made 14 of 19 shots and eight of 14 free throws.

Cash Warren, the son of former UCLA standout Mike Warren, had seven points, three assists and three rebounds. He made a three-point shot to give the Roadrunners a 40-32 lead in the third quarter.

Wes Wilcox had 20 points for the Swordsmen (18-14).
