Long Beach Sweeps UCSB in Volleyball

Chris Seiffert’s 33 assists helped Long Beach State in its three-game victory over UC Santa Barbara in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball Friday in Santa Barbara.

Geoff Cryst and Gaby Amar each had eight kills to lead the 49ers, 15-7, 15-13, 15-3. Ryan Mariano had three aces for Long Beach State (13-6, 8-6). UC Santa Barbara drops to 9-7, 7-5.

In Big West Conference women’s softball:

Long Beach State 7, Pacific 0--Amy Miner (6-3) pitched a complete game with five strikeouts for Long Beach State (20-8).

In the first game, the 49ers shut out Pacific, 5-0, behind a one-hitter by Tammy Dietrich (10-4).

Sacramento State 5-8, Cal State Fullerton 0-0--Susie Bugliarello (12-2) pitched a two-hitter and struck out 14 for Sacramento State (17-7-1, 5-1) in the first game.

Sacramento State defeated the Titans, 8-0, in five innings in the second game. Bugliarello held the Titans (7-9, 0-4) hitless and struck out seven.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 16-10, Redlands 0-0 (5, mercy)--Katie Smithson and Brittany Carlson (6-1) combined to pitch a one-hitter for Chapman (11-3). Stephanie Carew was two for three with four RBIs and three runs scored and Jessamine Maiben was three for four with three RBIs for the Panthers.

Chapman shut out Redlands, 10-0, with Maiben pitching a two-hitter in the first game.

In the Titan Classic women’s tennis:

Idaho State 5, Cal State Fullerton 4--Debbie Vonusa won in singles, 6-2, 7-5, and won with Jennifer Canfield in doubles, 8-4, for Cal State Fullerton.

Poomima Swaminathain won in singles, 6-1, 6-4, and Denise Wilson and Brooke Lacey won in doubles, 8-5, for the Titans.
