Pettyjohn Silences Northridge

Adam Pettyjohn held Cal State Northridge to five hits and Fresno State defeated the Matadors, 9-0, Saturday night before 4,502 in the final of the Johnny Quik tournament at Fresno State.

The only damage against Pettyjohn (3-3), a sophomore left-hander who earlier beat Stanford on a two-hitter, were two singles by Terrmel Sledge, a double by Andy Wilson, and singles by Jose Miranda and Cesar Martinez. Northridge (21-10-1) finished 4-2 in the week-long tournament.

Fresno State (7-12) knocked around Erasmo Ramirez (5-2) for eight hits and seven runs in 5 1/3 innings. Ramirez gave up a run in the first, four in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Craig Da Luz homered, tripled and doubled for the Bulldogs. Darren Dyt homered and Jeff Prieto had a run-scoring double.

Miranda, who hit four home runs in the tournament, made the all-tournament team along with teammates Adam Kennedy and Benny Flores.

Pepperdine 3, Oral Roberts 0--Andy Shibilo pitched a three-hitter, striking out 10 and walking none, to lead the Waves (10-14) in the Oral Roberts tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

The Titans (12-12) got two hits in the first inning before Shibilo retired 13 consecutive batters.

Pepperdine took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a run-scoring groundout by Damon Katz and scored twice in the eighth on consecutive sacrifice flies by Josh Oder and David Matranga.

Masters 14, UC San Diego 2--Aaron Penberthy was three for five with three runs batted in for Masters (12-15) in a nonconference game at UC San Diego.

Glendale 12, Canyons 7--Karl Castro’s grand slam highlighted a seven-run ninth for the Vaqueros (15-7, 6-2), who pulled into a first-place tie with the Cougars in the Southern Division of the Western State Conference at Canyons.

Darren Reisman had four hits for Glendale and David Soto had four hits for Canyons (16-6, 6-2).

Cuesta 12, Ventura 0--Mike Gray pitched a one-hitter for the Cougars and struck out 18 in a WSC game at Cuesta (19-3). Brian Riley had the hit for Ventura (14-8), a fifth-inning single.

Mission 10, Valley 3--Jose Sandoval had four hits, drove in two runs and stole two bases for the Free Spirit in a WSC game at Valley (2-17-3, 1-7). Jerry Delgado added two hits for Mission.

Pierce 8, Bakersfield 3--Tony Monteil had three hits and two RBIs, including a two-run double, for Pierce (8-14, 2-6) in a WSC game at Bakersfield (15-6, 5-3).

VOLLEYBALL

CS Northridge d. Pacific, 15-11, 15-8, 16-17, 15-5--The No. 15 Matadors (9-9, 5-7) upset ninth-ranked Pacific (12-6, 5-6) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Pacific. Chad Strickland of Northridge had 30 kills and 19 digs, and Jason Hughes added 27 kills and five blocks. Dan Fisher had 67 assists and 10 digs.
