What it is: The official site of the Academy Awards, brought to you by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (as in, “I’d like to thank the Academy”) and ABC Online (the network broadcasting the event). They’ve got lists of nominees, their bios and clips of their performances as well as summaries and credits of nominated films (even those in the Best Short Subject and Best Foreign Language Film categories). There’s a place to send your Oscar jokes to Billy Crystal, who is hosting the show and promises to look through them, a calendar of Oscar events (including when celebrities signed on to present) and fashion notes, fashion notes, fashion notes. Contests, trivia, an Academy database going back to 1927, news, events . . .

Name: Hollywood Stock Exchange

What it is: Prudential Securities managing director Michael Burns and broker-turned-poet Max Keiser developed and financed a simulated stock exchange where users can buy and sell shares in celebrities, movies studios, opening release weekends and scripts. Share prices fluctuate based on investor input and actual Hollywood events. Howard Stern dropped 20 points on Tuesday; Rosie O’Donnell continues to go strong. Apparently Keiser and Burns believe that if we play on a fake stock market with fake money we’ll eventually want to invest real money in real indie film projects sponsored by Keiser and Burns.

Comments: It’s like being a movie mogul--without having to get up early for breakfast meetings. They give you $2 million so you can put your virtual money where your virtual mouth is.
