Chapman’s Carew Is on a Hot Streak

Even compared to standards set by her Hall of Fame father, Chapman softball player Stephanie Carew is on a remarkable hot streak.

Carew, daughter of former Angel player and current batting coach Rod Carew, is batting .722 (13 for 18) with 22 runs batted in in Chapman’s last six games.

Tuesday, Carew was five for seven (single, double, triple and two home runs), with 10 RBIs in 12-0 and 13-1 victories over Colorado College.

She is batting .524 for the season with a 1.071 slugging percentage and has played a big part in the Panthers’ 11-game winning streak.

Chapman, 13-3 and ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division III, will host Pacific Lutheran in a doubleheader at 5 p.m. Sunday at Hart Park in Orange.

Women’s track and field: Chapman set a school record in the distance medley Saturday at the Santa Barbara Eastern Relays. Tara McGranahan (1,200 meters), Yasmin Giaimo (400), Cortney Postlethwait (800) and Pilar Gordillo (1,600) finished fourth in 13 minutes 35.77 seconds, nearly three seconds better than the record set in 1986 when Chapman was an NCAA Division II program.

Honors: Flo Luppani, a senior on the Chapman women’s basketball team, and Eddie Perez, a senior on the men’s soccer team, were named to district academic All-American teams. Luppani is a sociology major with a 3.64 grade-point. Perez is a psychology major with a 3.21 GPA.
