Why Don’t Women Get Equal Treatment?

Share

I thought the two ladies last week made some good points about the women’s NCAA tournament not getting as much coverage as the men’s. Sexism and gender discrimination may well be involved. Combine those two things with the fact that nobody cares about women’s basketball and I think you have the answer.

The thing that made Ms. Taylor’s letter last week more frightening was that she stated that she was a teacher.

Evidently, the concept she is trying to inculcate in those whose education is entrusted to her care is that it is not important to do your job well and honestly but only to be politically correct. Part of a newspaper’s job is to decide what information best satisfies the readers’ desires. It is not the paper’s fault that people are more interested in reading about what the men did than the women. The men’s teams are better. They run faster, jump higher and shoot more interesting shots.

I’m old, but my feelings aren’t hurt that the regular golf tour gets more coverage than the senior tour. It’s not unreasonable that the Olympics gets more coverage than the Special Olympics.

Maybe lack of interest has something to do with it. USC vs. USF women’s game drew 2,806. UCLA vs. Xavier men drew 21,020.
