Rodgers Heading Back to the Dugout

Buck Rodgers, former manager of the Angels, is expected to be named manager of the Mission Viejo Vigilantes Monday at a press conference, according to a club official.

Rodgers, 58, will replace Jeff Burroughs, who resigned Friday.

Rodgers spent nine seasons as a major league catcher. He managed more than 1,000 games, winning more than 600 in 13-plus seasons with Milwaukee, Montreal and the Angels.

His last job in the major leagues was as a scout for the Phillies in 1995. “I think Buck is an outstanding baseball guy,” said Lee Thomas, Philadelphia’s general manager and a teammate of Rodgers on the Angels. “If the game has passed him by, then it has passed us all by.”

Burroughs managed the Western Baseball League team its two seasons in Long Beach, leading first the Barracuda, then the Riptide to consecutive league titles.

“Jeff has been a vital part of the development of this organization,” General Manager Paula Pyers said, “and we will miss him.”
