No Offers, but O’Malley Says Sale Progressing on Schedule

Dodger President Peter O’Malley said Tuesday that he has yet to receive an offer to buy the club, but that he still expects to sell it within three months.

“We have not had any offers,” O’Malley said. “We have not solicited any offers. We have not put any price on the property.

“We’ve had informal talks with a number of people, and we’re still on the same timetable. There’s no reason to change that timetable. I think we’re about where we thought we’d be.”

O’Malley also said that he still is interested in buying an expansion NFL team and building a new stadium, but only if the group of city officials backing the Coliseum is eventually turned down.

“Los Angeles needs a football stadium, wherever it is,” he said. “Los Angeles deserves a state-of-the-art football stadium.”

O’Malley had predicted it would take four to six months to sell the Dodgers when he announced Jan. 6 that the club was for sale.

It has been suggested that he could retain controlling interest in the club while selling part of it, perhaps to a corporation.

“Anything is possible,” he said Tuesday. “ . . . I’d like to stay on, but I don’t know what will be in my future. I’d like to be back here [in Dodgertown], and I think there’s a good chance I will be, but I don’t know.”

O’Malley also said he has met with Vero Beach officials.

“I will do everything possible to keep the Dodgers in Vero Beach [for spring training],” he said. “I’m committed to that and hope the Dodgers continue to train here for a long time. I think the Dodger buyer will recognize the tradition we have here, build it up and take it to a higher level.”
