Relentless Waves Finally Subdue Long Beach, 13-12

It took four lead changes before Pepperdine could pull off its 10th consecutive home victory, a 13-12 upset of Long Beach State in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday in Malibu.

The Waves (16-15) ended a nine-game winning streak by the 49ers, who are ranked 17th in the nation by Collegiate Baseball and 19th by Baseball America.

Eric Brubaker (1-0) pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief and John Workman earned his second save by striking out J.J. Newkirk with a runner on second base to end the game after Brubaker surrendered a two-run home run to Steve Doherty and a double to Casey Martin.

The Waves scored nine runs in the fourth inning on seven hits, including a three-run double by Tyler Ferrer and three-run pinch-hit home run by Jeremy White, to take a 9-2 lead.

Long Beach (17-12) rallied with seven runs in the fifth inning to tie the score, 9-9.

A two-out run-scoring single in the seventh inning by Doherty put Long Beach ahead, 10-9.

Pepperdine regained the lead, 11-10, on a two-run single by Ferrer in the bottom half of the seventh and a two-run single by Josh Oder in the eighth put the Waves up, 13-10.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cal State Northridge 6, Southwest Missouri 3--Wendy Vining and Jocie Hendricks each recorded a victory in singles play and teamed up to win at No. 3 doubles for the Matadors (6-10) in a nonconference match at Northridge.

Vining defeated Molly Gunter, 6-2, 6-0, and Hendricks beat Rebecca Camden, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, they combined to defeat Camden and Amy Lawson, 8-4.
