Controlled Fire Set in Area Long Free of Flames

The Ventura County Fire Protection District and the National Park Service are planning a controlled burn today in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

On Wednesday, a controlled burn in Sisar Canyon Road on the edge of Los Padres National Forest was stopped after the fire began to spread. Officials canceled a second burn that was scheduled today in the same area.

Fire had not burned through that spot for almost a century. Officials said they would likely wait for rain to dampen the area before attempting another controlled burn.

In the east county, cleared and dried brush has already been gathered on about 20 acres of land where the Santa Monica Mountains burn is scheduled to take place, a Ventura County Fire Department spokeswoman said.

Fire has not burned through the area for at least a decade, officials said.
