Burgess, Chenowith in Senior Game

Chris Burgess, The Times Orange County boys’ basketball player of the year, and Eric Chenowith, a Times’ first-team selection, will be among 24 of the nation’s top seniors competing Saturday in the 20th McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball Game in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The game will be broadcast live by CBS, beginning at 11 a.m.

Burgess, a 6-foot-10 center who led Woodbridge to the Southern Section Division II-AA championship, will attend Duke in the fall. Chenowith, a 7-1 center who helped Villa Park reach the Division II-AA title game, will attend Kansas.

Other local players competing are Baron Davis of Santa Monica Crossroads and brothers Jarron and Jason Collins of North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake.

The 1997 U.S. Adult National Badminton Championships will be April 3-6 at the Orange County Badminton Club in Orange.

Play will include men’s and women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles. U.S. players will compete for national titles and $10,000 in prize money. Proceeds from the tournament will go to the United Cerebral Palsy Assn. of Orange County.

Daily tickets for the preliminary rounds are $5, and $10 for the finals. A four-day ticket is available for $20.

The California state high school girls’ all-star basketball game--Game III--will be played April 5 at Irvine Valley College.

Among the local players who will compete for the South are Tayyiba Haneef and Tamara Inoue, who led Laguna Hills to its first state Division II title, and Brea Olinda’s Jennifer Saari.

Among the North players will be Shavaki Jackson of Division I state champion Berkeley, and Erin Buescher from Division V champion Rincon Valley Christian.

South coaches are Poway’s Jay Trousdale and Capistrano Valley’s Pete Belanto.

Admission is $5, with all youth and high school players free if they wear their team or practice jersey. Preliminary games feature North Orange County Sharks vs. Brea Polcats (5:30 p.m.) and the Inland Empire Basketball Club vs. Ventura Stars (4:15 p.m.).
