Time Warner Communications, the new cable provider for the West Valley and San Fernando, is accepting nominations for its 1996-97 National Teacher Awards competition, which recognizes instructors who use cable television in their lessons.

The competition, now in its eighth year nationwide, will honor 14 teachers or teacher teams from applications throughout the country.

“This gives us a great opportunity to acknowledge some of the creative activity that is going on in our schools,” said Time Warner Communications division Vice President David Auger.

The company provides 500 hours of commercial-free, educational programming from more than 20 channels, including classical ballets, operas, historical programs and science and nature.

Company officials said approximately 91% of the West Valley and San Fernando schools have already been wired for cable by Time Warner.

The award is open to teachers or teacher teams who have used this programming for special projects that enhance the lessons. Classroom projects should have taken place between Sept. 1, 1996, and April 11 of this year.

Winners receive $1,000, a crystal apple sculpture and a trip to Washington, D.C., for a banquet.

Additionally, the company announced the creation of an annual scholarship program for high school seniors who are interested in the telecommunications field.

Five graduating seniors in the Time Warner service area will receive $5,000 scholarships to go toward their continued education. Applications must be received by April 24, and winners will be announced in May.
