Jury Finds Burbank Man Guilty of Killing Over Wedding Ring

A Burbank man was convicted of first-degree murder Friday and could face 49 years in prison for killing a man he mistakenly believed had possession of his wedding ring.

The jury of eight women and four men found Andres Gutierrez, 25, guilty of the murder of Adolfo Nunez, and also convicted him of assault with a deadly weapon for shooting at another man, Augustin Carillo Juarez, during the Feb. 10 attack last year in North Hills.

The bullets, fired from a .25-caliber handgun, missed Juarez when the gun misfired. Nunez died after he was shot in the back and shoulder.

The attack began after Gutierrez traded his gold wedding band for rock cocaine and then later changed his mind, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Gloria Katz.

Apparently regretting the transaction, Gutierrez returned to the neighborhood several times seeking the man with his ring.

With his wife next to him in their yellow Chevrolet Nova, Gutierrez got out and argued in Spanish with Nunez.

Nunez said, according to court records, “I don’t know what you’re looking for.” Gutierrez replied “I’m going to kill you” and fired six shots.

Gutierrez is scheduled to be sentenced April 30 by Superior Court Judge Judith M. Ashmann. He faces a maximum sentence of 49 years.
