Raiders Deal and Get Second Pick in Draft

The Oakland Raiders acquired the second overall pick in the NFL draft from the New Orleans Saints on Monday, giving up wide receiver Daryl Hobbs and three draft picks.

The Raiders also will get the Saints’ sixth-round pick. Besides Hobbs, the Raiders gave up their first-round pick, 10th overall, and second- and fourth-round selections.

Chicago signed cornerback Tom Carter, the transition free agent of Washington, to a five-year, $13.8-million offer sheet. . . . Detroit signed former Kansas City quarterback Matt Blundin as a free agent. . . . Running back Lorenzo Neal, a free agent from New Orleans, signed with the New York Jets. . . Restricted free agent quarterback Heath Shuler reached an agreement with New Orleans over the weekend, but Washington reportedly is seeking at least a No. 2 pick from the Saints. . . . New England signed veteran offensive tackle Zefross Moss, an unrestricted free agent who was with Detroit.

Martina Hingis, the 16-year-old Swiss sensation, became the youngest No. 1 player in tennis history after winning her fifth title of 1997 at the Lipton Championships on Saturday.

Hingis replaced Steffi Graf, who had held at least a share of the No. 1 ranking since June 1995, in the WTA Tour rankings.

Monica Seles, who reached the top of the rankings at 17 in 1991, was the youngest previous No. 1.

Cleveland Indian pitcher Jose Mesa was in a Cleveland court when jury selection began in his rape trial, two days before the start of the Indians’ baseball season.

Mesa, charged with rape, gross sexual imposition and felonious assault, arrived at court with his wife, Mirla.

Netherlands police arrested more than 100 soccer fans before a game Monday, hoping to prevent a repeat of a street fight eight days ago in which a man was clubbed to death. Police made the arrests after discovering that fans of first division FC Den Bosch and ADO Den Haag had arranged to fight before the match.

NBC acquired a 25% stake in Madison Square Garden and its two tenants, the New York Knicks and Rangers, as part of a deal that also gave it part ownership of several cable networks.
