City Delays Decision on Korean District

An emotional debate over the proposed signs to designate a strip of Garden Grove Boulevard as the city’s Korean Business District ended Monday night without a decision from the City Council.

Members of the Korean Chamber of Commerce of Orange County renewed their controversial efforts to install two cement monument signs on the boulevard in an effort to bring attention to the highly concentrated Korean business area. Plans called for the signs to be placed near Brookhurst Street and Beach Boulevard.

Several area residents and business owners spoke against the plan, arguing that the designation would divide rather than unify the city’s ethnic groups. Additionally, Councilman Bob Dinsen said he received more than 40 letters opposing the designation on similar grounds.

The council tabled the matter so proponents could submit a more detailed proposal, perhaps by early summer.

Members of the Korean chamber vowed to move forward with developing plans for the signs.
