Flames swept through a two-story single family dwelling Wednesday night, injuring one firefighter.

The fire broke out just after 9 p.m. in a hillside house in the 17700 block of Palora Street, south of Ventura Boulevard, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The family escaped the house uninjured, but one firefighter was taken to a local hospital for unknown injuries late Wednesday, authorities said.

Firefighters arrived to find the house engulfed by fire, with flames burning through the roof, Humphrey said.

It took 50 firefighters 37 minutes to extinguish the flames.

Humphrey said the firefighters were aided by a drop in the winds, which had blown strongly during the day.

The fire remained under investigation late Wednesday and the damage estimate was still being tallied, Humphrey said, adding that the damage appeared to be severe.
