FRESHWATER

17. CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass cooperating for most, particularly guides. Gary Harrison with Mack Weinberg and Kevin Templenton and P.K. Alexander, South Bay, 12 bass, largest 16-0 by Weinberg, on crawdads and Optimum Swimbaits. Troy Folkestad with Kevin Cleary, Illinois, 11-9 bass and six smaller fish, on Swimbaits and crawdads.

18. LAKE PIRU--Trout fair for trollers at east end and center of lake. Needlefish lures accounting for most limits. Largemouth bass active at 10-15 feet off points, biting mostly on plastic worms and night crawlers.

19. PYRAMID LAKE--Still a few striped bass being caught at Yellow Bar on anchovies. Largemouth and smallmouth bass remain active in shallows. Catfish picking up. Randy Young, Compton, eight catfish, 25-0, on anchovies.

20. LAKE CACHUMA--Largemouth bass best bet, biting mostly on spinner baits at 2-10 feet. Trout fair for trollers outside harbor and at dam. Needlefish working best. Some limits. Red-ear perch fair on night crawlers at island.

21. LAKE CASITAS--Russ Partee, Oxnard, 10-0 bass, on Optimum Swimbait. Marlin Spencer, Santa Barbara, 10-2 and 7-8 bass, on homemade lures. Lots of smaller bass biting on plastic worms and crankbaits. Catfish picking up.

22. CORONA LAKE--Ever catch a brownbow? The hatchery-raised cross between a rainbow and brown trout--supposedly more aggressive than your typical rainbow--is being introduced to the lake as part of a contest that begins Saturday. A 14-5 rainbow was caught by Leon Davis, Altadena, on Power Bait near ramp.

23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--The brownbows have arrived (see Corona Lake) and figure to cause some excitement, but the eye-openers have been the sturgeon. A 40-pounder was caught by Tommy Palmiero, Torrance, on Power Bait at Pump House. Large rainbows also being caught.

24. IRVINE LAKE--Lots of trout being caught by boaters, few by shore fishermen. Power Bait getting most. Largemouth bass fair on plastic worms and crankbaits.

25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Trout averaging 1-3 pounds. Some limits filled, but average is 1-3 fish per person. Boaters using inflated night crawlers and Power Bait doing best. Largemouth bass fairly active. A 12-8 was landed by Don Bishop, Foothill Ranch, on a woolly bugger fly. Shallow-water crankbaits getting most.

26. LAKE SKINNER--Top catch, 17-0 striped bass by Eddie Lor, Temecula, on waterdog at north shore. Top stringer, a 20-5 string of catfish (on anchovies) and an 8-2 trout (mealworm) by Johnny Hernandez, Winchester. Largemouth bass bite fair as well.

27. LAKE PERRIS--Lowering of lake 4-6 feet by state was enough to disrupt largemouth bass spawn and shut off the bite for big fish, which have abandoned their nest for deeper water. Largest was a 6-8 by Lyle Harn, Garden Grove, on TD worm at east end. Bluegill action fair on crickets and mealworms. Some trout caught at island.

28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--El Capitan providing lots of action for bass fishermen--809 anglers accounted for 2,852 in past week. Largest, an 8-9 caught on a plastic worm by John Collins, San Diego. Crappie bite not bad, either. Suthlerland, Hodges, San Vicente and Otay also producing quality catches. Miramar and Murray fair for mostly trout, but a 17-4 bass was reportedly landed at Miramar. A 26-4 catfish was caught at Hodges.

29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Snow fell and wind blew hard earlier this week, but trout kept biting and occasional limits were obtained on various lures and bait. Largemouth bass activity has picked up, despite water temperatures in the 50s.
