The New York Mets acquired left-hander Takashi Kashiwada from the Yomiuri Giants on Thursday for cash considerations. It was the first transaction between the Giants and a major league team.

Kashiwada, 25, participated in the Mets’ spring training as part of an educational exchange. He is expected to join the Mets’ triple-A affiliate at Norfolk, Va., in about 10 days, as soon as he obtains his visa.

“The search for talent in baseball is now worldwide,” Met General Manager Joe McIlvaine said. “We hope this deal is a precursor of things to come.”

Kashiwada was picked by the Tokyo Giants in the 1990 draft. He was 1-1 with a 3.82 ERA in 26 big-league games in Japan.

The Cincinnati Reds recalled right-hander Scott Sullivan from triple-A Indianapolis to replace Jeff Brantley on the roster. The 33-year-old Brantley was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of tendinitis in his right shoulder.
