Trojans vs. Bruins: the Battle of Babble

Perhaps the best recurring feature in the L.A. Times is the weekly Trojan viewpoint letter. Rarely, if ever, does it address a substantive issue. More often than not, the Trojan scribes are reduced to griping about coverage or taking pot shots at UCLA. Last week’s offering was that “Trojans take losses like men.”

Well, after last year’s 48-41 overtime loss to UCLA, Trojan tailback LaVale Woods apparently took the loss like a Bruin. He cried his eyes out in the locker room after the game [Times, Nov. 24]. I suspect he was not alone. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Dan Corber complains in his letter that for every USC fan that whines about there not being enough coverage, there are 10 Bruins whining. That is because there are 50 Bruin fans for every USC fan. And if USC players take losses like men, then why are any of them whining as he says they do? But that is Trojan logic.

Enough already! In his column of March 27, Chris Dufresne maintains that Pete Dalis should have given Jim Harrick a “second chance.” According to what I have read, Dalis gave Harrick a second chance when he gave him an opportunity to admit what he did after being confronted with the evidence. Harrick still denied the truth, not once but twice. If I got as many mulligans as Mr. Dufresne thinks Harrick should have, I would be a scratch golfer.
