Bohanon Gets Call, Then Best of Giants

Brian Bohanon, starting in place of ailing Pete Harnisch on two hours notice after his recall from the minor leagues, pitched seven strong innings for his first National League victory as New York defeated the San Francisco Giants, 4-2, on Sunday.

Harnisch, who has been suffering from insomnia, was sent to New York earlier in the day. There is some speculation he might be going through withdrawal after trying to quit a 13-year chewing tobacco habit but there was no official word on his condition pending another evaluation by team doctors.

Bohanon (1-0) was recalled Saturday from triple-A Norfolk to fill the roster spot of disabled pitcher Yorkis Perez and was told by Valentine two hours before Sunday’s game he would be making his first start in nearly two years.

He gave up two runs on four hits, struck out five and walked one in helping the Mets salvage a victory in the finale of the three-game series. It was his first start since Aug. 20, 1995, when he was a member of the Detroit Tigers.

John Franco relieved Bohanon to start the ninth. Glenallen Hill led off with a bloop double and Barry Bonds walked on four pitches. But Franco struck out Jeff Kent and got J.T. Snow on a game-ending double-play grounder.

Bohanon, after giving up a two-out double to Kent, retired 15 consecutive batters before Hill’s two-out single in the sixth. But Bohanon disposed of the threat by getting Bonds on a popup.

Mark Gardner (0-1) pitched seven innings, settling down after giving up three runs in the first.

Lance Johnson, who has hit safely in all six games he has played (nine for 24), drew a leadoff walk, Bernard Gilkey and Carlos Baerga later had run-scoring singles and Huskey had a sacrifice fly.

San Francisco came up with a run in the bottom of the first on Hill’s single, which scored Stan Javier, who had a leadoff single and stole second.

Alex Ochoa had an RBI double in the Met ninth.
