Students at AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School will have more elbow room this fall when the school opens its new classroom building.

Additional classroom space is needed to allow for three sections of each grade level and to limit class sizes to 24 students per room, said Principal Hagop Hagopian.

Construction has begun on the site.

The one-story building, which will primarily be used by grade-school students, will house six classrooms, a library and a faculty room, Hagopian said.

The structure is the latest addition to the 6 1/2-acre campus, which currently has five classroom buildings, a high school building, administration building, gymnasium, multipurpose auditorium and a playground, among other amenities, Hagopian said.

As with its other buildings, Hagopian said, the new structure will be available for use by community groups. Currently, the LAPD Neighborhood Watch group for Winnetka, Foster Parents Assn. and various Armenian organizations use the facilities.

The Manoogian-Demirdjian School is owned and operated by the Armenian General Benevolent Union, a worldwide philanthropic organization that preserves and promotes Armenian heritage, Hagopian said.

The school has an enrollment of 900 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, Hagopian said. In addition to core academic courses, the students learn Armenian language, literature, history and culture.
