Public to Flock to Pierce Sheepshearing

In an effort to raise public awareness that the farm at Pierce College is still viable and operating and to raise funds for the cash-strapped agriculture department, two demonstrations of sheepshearing for local schoolchildren are scheduled Wednesday.

Pierce’s shepherd, instructor Bill Lander, will shear sheep at 9:30 and at 10:30 a.m. in the pasture outside the sheep barn on the farm, 6201 Winnetka Ave.

The public is invited to join the children, who are from local schools as well as outside the Valley, for the annual free demonstration, which includes wool spinning.

“Sheepshearing demonstrations help children learn where the wool clothing they wear comes from,” Lander said.

The college’s flock of approximately 80 sheep are sheared each spring and the wool is sold to benefit the college’s agriculture program, school officials said.

The flock consists of several breeds, including Suffolk, merino, Cotswold and Southdown.
