Long Beach Overwhelms UCLA, 14-3

Paul Day had three hits and four runs batted in as Long Beach State upset fifth-ranked UCLA, 14-3, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at UCLA. The 13th-ranked 49ers (24-13) have won 16 of their last 18 games.

Long Beach’s Toby Sanchez, a graduate of Mater Dei, had two hits, including a three-run double in the fourth inning.

Brandon Hyde and Casey Martin each had home runs for the 49ers.

UCLA is 29-10-1.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference:

Point Loma Nazarene 11, Concordia 3--David Gonzalez had a home run, a double and four RBIs for Point Loma Nazarene (13-22-1, 5-10). Dustin Engel, Brent Baum, Scott Stewart and Rick Sales each had two hits for Point Loma.

Brent Waslefsky had two doubles for Concordia (15-20, 5-10).

In nonconference baseball:

Southern California College 8, Whittier College 6--Kevin Doyle had three hits and three runs in a victory for Southern California College (26-10). Rob Pegg and Joseph Rivera each had two hits for the Vanguards.

Matthew Newton scored two runs for Southern California College.

At the Western Intercollegiate golf Tournament:

Vitale ties for 10th--UC Irvine’s Conan Vitale finished with a three-day total of 219 (six-over par) to tie for 10th in the Western Intercollegiate tournament at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz. Vitale shot 73 in the final round.

Stanford’s Joel Kribel, who was eliminated by Tiger Woods in the semifinals of last year’s U.S. Amateur, finished four-under for the tournament, five strokes ahead of Jay Berkowitz (Cal) and Didier deVooght (Ohio State).

Long Beach State’s Sean Brocklebank finished in 41st place, 18 over-par. The 49ers finished 13th.

In Big West Conference women’s softball:

Long Beach State 1-3, Utah State 0-2--Long Beach State scored an unearned run in the second, which proved to be the winner in the second game.

Tammy Dietrich (16-7) won her third straight with a five-hit shutout for the 49ers (30-13-1).

Nicola Walsh scored the winning run on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh for Long Beach State in the first game of the doubleheader.

Amy Miner (10-5) took a perfect game into the seventh inning before allowing Utah State (13-21) to recover from a 2-0 deficit with two unearned runs on two hits and two errors.

In men’s tennis:

Southern California College 6, Biola 1--Nan Ma defeated Biola’s Jeff Culver, 6-0, 6-1. Teammate Brain Matek defeated Will Geisler of Biola, 6-4, 6-0.

Ma and Matek later defeated Culver and Dave Suh in doubles, 8-2.
