A Mission Hills man suspected in a hit-and-run accident that killed a 77-year-old woman was being held Sunday at the County Jail ward at County-USC Medical Center, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said.

Robert Joseph Lopez, 29, was captured after driving away from a crash that killed Ardis Hundley of Granada Hills, said Sgt. John Amott of the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division. Police were awaiting results of a blood test to determine if Lopez was under the influence of alcohol, Amott said.

The accident occurred about 6 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of South Brand Boulevard and Columbus Avenue. Hundley was thrown from her car after it was struck by Lopez’s van, and she died at the scene from head injuries, police said.

Lopez suffered a broken leg in the accident and was arrested a block away from the site of the crash when his injury caused him to pull over, according to police.
