FRESHWATER

17. CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass action remains steady. Steve Arkline, Canyon Country, two 12-pounders and one eight-pounder, on crawdads. Rod Thigpen, Santa Paula, a 10-pounder on a Stocker Trout lure. Gary Harrison and two clients, several bass, largest 13-6, on crawdads. Several others.

18. LAKE PIRU--Largemouth bass scattered, biting mostly on night crawlers and plastic worms. Peter Cervantez, Fillmore, caught a 7-pound 9-ounce bass on a crawdad. Trout bite fair for trollers using Needlefish along east shore and down middle of lake. Crappies becoming active at north end.

19. PYRAMID LAKE--Smallmouth bass still in spawn and biting in shallows on white spinnerbaits, night crawlers and mudsuckers. Striped bass holding at 30 feet, biting on anchovies and blood worms. Catfish action picking up in marina area.

20. LAKE CACHUMA--Largemouth bass action fair at about 10 feet, biting on spinnerbaits, plastic worms and crankbaits. Red-ear perch action picking up, biting in shallows on night crawlers. One weighed in at 3 1/2 pounds. Trout bite fair off points near dam. Trollers (Needlefish) and bait fishermen (night crawlers) averaging a few fish per day.

21. LAKE CASITAS--Dana Rosen, Canoga Park, 12-10 bass, on Castaic Trout. Mario Arana, Wilmington, 12-8 bass, on crawdad. Mark Albertson, Ojai, 12-pound bass, on Castaic Trout. A few others weighing more than 10 pounds and lots of smaller bass biting on shad, plastic worms and night crawlers.

22. CORONA LAKE--Trout bite fair in early morning. Top fish, 13-3 by Dan Robson, Redlands, while trolling a Roostertail.

23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Julius Estanislao, Carson, landed a brownbow at 7-6, the biggest since the rainbow-brown trout crossbreed was introduced to the lakes two weeks ago, on a Bang Tail lure at Big Lake. Top fish was a 25-8 sturgeon by Floyd James, Los Angeles, on mackerel at Bubble Hole. A 13-9 rainbow was caught by M.W. Butcher, Downey, on Power Bait at La Palma Point.

24. IRVINE LAKE--Trout action steady. Wendy Leung, Huntington Beach, and Donny Spencer, Orange, using mini-jigs, caught five trout totaling 54 pounds, the largest 17-4. Crappie and catfish action picking up. Largemouth bass action remains steady.

25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--There is no limit for trout fishermen in an attempt to fish the lake out before the summer sun heats the lake to the point where the trout wouldn’t survive anyway. Tony Mitchell and son Patrick, Mission Viejo, did their part by catching 42 trout in four hours the other day. Night crawlers and Power Bait getting most. Largemouth bass are getting cannibalistic, swimming in schools, eating bass fry. Reportedly, some have even been seen eating ducklings. Finesse jigs getting fish to seven pounds.

26. LAKE SKINNER--Trout and striped bass providing most action. Mike and Ronnie Chandler, Canyon Lake, used live shad to fill a stringer with 15 stripers totaling 75 pounds, the largest seven pounds. Brownie Brown, Winchester, five trout, largest two pounds. No fishing or boating will be allowed April 25-27 because of the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival.

27. LAKE PERRIS--Lots of small largemouth bass being caught at east end, but a 15-foot drop in water level has prematurely ended the spawn of bigger fish in shallows. Trout action fair along dam and at east end. Power Bait ad small Needlefish lures getting most. Bluegill bite fair. Mini-jigs and crickets taking most.

28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--El Capitan gets a slight edge over Otay, San Vicente and Sutherland in terms of bass fishing, but you can’t go wrong at any reservoir. Top fish was one 13-10 by Jeff Row, Lakeside, on a Dads & Dogs lure at Otay. El Capitan best bet for crappies, too. Miramar and Murray producing occasional trout catches and spotty bass catches. Hodges fair for bass and catfish.

29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Spring has finally arrived here. Crappies, catfish, bluegills and bass have become active. Harold Albritton, San Diego, 25 bluegills totaling 11 pounds, and 10 crappies totaling five pounds, on shiners and red worms. Trout still active as well, biting mainly on rainbow Power Bait and night crawlers.

2. MORRO BAY (Bob’s Sportfishing)--10 anglers (1 boat): 7 lingcod, 100 red rock cod, 5 Pacific snapper, 45 rockfish, 1 salmon.

3. AVILA BEACH--15 anglers (2 boats): 69 rock cod, 51 red snapper, 4 salmon.

4. SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--38 anglers (2 boats): 114 calico bass, 7 sand bass, 1 cabezon, 1 barracuda, 21 rockfish.

5. VENTURA--26 anglers (3 boats): 4 calico bass, 43 barracuda, 2 rockfish, 2 blue perch, 5 salmon.

6. OXNARD (Cisco’s)--55 anglers (3 boats): 214 rockfish, 10 blue perch, 25 sculpin, 4 sheephead, 31 whitefish, 15 perch, 2 cow cod. (Gold Coast)--22 anglers (2 boats): 160 barracuda, 45 sand bass, 2 white sea bass, 3 salmon.

7. PORT HUENEME--52 anglers (3 boats): 322 rock cod, 5 cow cod, 273 barracuda.

8. MARINA DEL REY--42 anglers (3 boats): 7 halibut, 2 lingcod, 85 rockfish, 6 sand bass.

9. REDONDO BEACH--73 anglers (3 boats): 51 calico bass, 9 sand bass, 6 halibut, 1 cabezon, 9 sheephead, 5 whitefish, 3 sculpin, 28 rockfish.

10. SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--84 anglers (4 boats): 36 white sea bass, 218 calico bass, 153 rockfish, 65 salmon grouper, 36 sole, 14 sculpin, 16 whitefish, 12 red snapper, 5 sand bass, 9 halibut, 4 barracuda, 2 ling cod. (22nd St. Landing)--25 anglers (2 boats): 1 white sea bass, 35 calico bass, 2 halibut, 9 barracuda, 18 sculpin, 56 whitefish, 11 sheephead, 45 blue perch, 87 rockfish.

11. LONG BEACH--39 anglers (3 boats): 11 white sea bass, 114 calico bass, 29 sheephead, 10 whitefish, 70 perch, 7 rockfish. (Belmont Pier)--10 anglers (1 boat): 33 barracuda, 8 perch, 4 red snapper, 5 sand bass, 23 sculpin, 9 sheephead, 64 whitefish.

12. SEAL BEACH--35 anglers (2 boats): 4 sand bass, 56 whitefish, 5 sheephead, 34 sculpin, 439 rockfish, 28 red snapper, 10 salmon.
