An unintentional head butt by Joel Luna Zarate against Martin Solorio resulted in a second-round technical draw in a scheduled 10-round bantamweight main event before about 500 on Thursday night at the Reseda Country Club.

Zarate (30-2-1 with 23 knockouts), ranked No. 1 by the World Boxing Council in the super flyweight division, entered the ring first and waited several minutes for Solorio to emerge from his dressing room.

When the fight began, the crowd was treated to little more than a few minutes of tentative sparring before a collision occurred 1:09 into the second round and Solorio (13-7-1) began bleeding badly from above the left eye.

Under state athletic commission rules, the fight was ruled a draw because it had not gone at least four rounds.

Zarate, a nephew of former WBC bantamweight champion Carlos Zarate, expressed disappointment.

“It’s a shame because the people didn’t get to see me fight,” Zarate said. “I wanted to show more.

“He came down and we hit together and we crushed. I was surprised that he was hurt.”

In other bouts, Effi “The Israeli Bomber” Schneider of Ten Goose Boxing in Van Nuys lost a unanimous decision to Daniel Hernandez in a six-round junior welterweight bout.

Schneider, a native of Tel Aviv, dropped to 7-2-1.

In a six-round light-heavyweight bout, Asluddin Umarov and Paul Jones fought to a majority draw.

Umarov entered the bout with a 17-3 record, with every victory coming by knockout. Two judges scored the bout even. A third favored Umarov, 57-55.
