No Injuries in Acid Spill at Navy Base

Hazardous-materials teams at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme responded to a chemical spill at the base Saturday after workers reported smelling an acrid odor, base spokeswoman Linda Wadley said.

The base’s hazardous-materials teams responded to the call about 11 a.m. after 12 workers at the base’s computer center reported the odor, Wadley said. No injuries were reported.

Upon investigation, authorities found that four to six batteries in a room adjacent to the computer center had broken their seals and leaked battery acid.

Wadley said the batteries, used in the event of a power outage, were housed in a room specially designed to contain such a spill.

She said the batteries were not in use at the time and that less than a gallon of the noxious acid leaked from them.
