A 26-year-old pregnant woman died after her car was broadsided, but authorities were able to save her baby, authorities said Monday.

Two boys in the car suffered minor injuries and were reported in stable condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange, a hospital spokeswoman said.

About 6:20 p.m. Sunday, Dao Nguyen of Westminster and two boys believed to be her sons were traveling south on Bowen Street when a sports utility truck heading west on Westminster Avenue broadsided their car, Police Lt. John Woods said.

Nguyen was taken to UCI Medical Center, where she died. However, doctors performed a caesarean section and were able to save her baby, a boy, who was in critical condition Monday, the hospital spokeswoman said. Police said they did not know how far along Nguyen was in her pregnancy, or if she was wearing a seat belt.

The two boys, ages 4 and 5, suffered minor injuries, mostly from flying glass shards, Woods said.

The driver of the small utility truck was not cited pending an investigation, but Woods said officers are looking into whether he ran a red light.
