Break Up the Cubs: Two Wins in a Row

From Associated Press

Errors by Butch Huskey and John Olerud led to two unearned runs in the seventh inning, and the Cubs won their second game in a row by defeating the Mets, 6-4, at New York on Monday.

The Cubs took a 3-0 lead, then fell behind, 4-3, in the sixth. But the Mets, who have 15 errors in 18 games, helped Chicago score three runs on three errors.

Dave Hansen, hitting for Castillo, doubled off Greg McMichael (0-2) leading off and third baseman Butch Huskey threw Brian McRae’s bunt wildly past first, allowing Hansen to score.

McRae took second on defensive indifference, Mark Grace walked with one out and Doug Glaville hit a two-out grounder to shortstop Rey Ordonez. But Olerud bobbled the throw from Ordonez, allowing McRae to score the go-ahead run.

Philadelphia 10, Pittsburgh 2--Mike Lieberthal homered and the Phillies scored some early-inning runs for a change, giving Curt Schilling (3-1) all the support he needed to win at Pittsburgh.

Lieberthal’s three-run homer keyed a four-run first inning off Steve Cooke (1-3), who labored with his control before settling down to shut out the Phillies over the next six innings.

New York Yankees 4, Chicago White Sox 3--Cecil Fielder, batting only .172, hit a tie-breaking double in the eighth as the Yankees rallied to defeat the White Sox at Chicago.

With the Yankees trailing, 3-2, Derek Jeter walked with one out in the eighth off Doug Drabek (1-2), stole second and scored the tying run on Wade Boggs’ single.

After an intentional walk to Tino Martinez, Drabek was replaced by Bill Simas, and Fielder hit a double to left to score pinch runner Pat Kelly.

Chicago’s Tony Phillips was ejected in the first inning by home plate umpire John Shulock. Phillips had to be restrained in the 11th inning of Sunday’s game after Shulock, working first base, told him to get back in the batter’s box. In his first at-bat Monday, Phillips fouled off a 1-1 pitch and began jawing at Shulock, who then ejected him.

Boston 4, Baltimore 2--Wil Cordero homered in a three-run fourth inning to lead the Red Sox at Boston.

Aaron Sele (3-0) gave up one run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings, walking five and striking out three.

Boston went ahead in the fourth when Reggie Jefferson singled, Tim Naehring doubled, Troy O’Leary hit a sacrifice fly and Cordero hit his fourth homer.

Seattle 6, Kansas City 5--Ken Griffey Jr. tied the score with a two-run triple and scored the go-ahead on Edgar Martinez’s sacrifice fly in the seventh inning as the Mariners beat the Royals at Seattle.

Brian Bevil (0-1) took over for Jose Rosado in the inning and walked pinch-hitters Joey Cora and Paul Sorrento before Alex Rodriguez hit into a fielder’s choice with Cora out at third.

Griffey followed with his first triple of the season into the right-field corner and then slid home after Martinez’s fly ball to right.

The Royals’ Jeff King hit a two-run homer off Bobby Ayala in the seventh after Seattle starter Randy Johnson failed to hold a 3-0 lead.
