Wakefield, 1-1 with a 4.24 earned-run average, will be replaced in the rotation by Chris Hammond for today’s game against Baltimore.
Boston recalled left-hander Vaughn Eshelman from triple-A Pawtucket to replace Wakefield on the roster.
Wakefield, a knuckleballer, was 14-13 with a 5.14 ERA for Boston last season.
The DL assignment is retroactive to April 15.
