The Boston Red Sox placed right-handed pitcher Tim Wakefield on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of swelling in his right elbow.

Wakefield, 1-1 with a 4.24 earned-run average, will be replaced in the rotation by Chris Hammond for today’s game against Baltimore.

Boston recalled left-hander Vaughn Eshelman from triple-A Pawtucket to replace Wakefield on the roster.
