From Staff Reports

It may be hard for Stanford fans to decide who to root for in today’s Pacific 10 Conference men’s singles championship--finalists Ryan Wolters and Bob Bryan both play for the Cardinal--but it will be easy for the locals.

Bryan, from nearby Camarillo, should get all the support in today’s 11 a.m. singles final. Bryan defeated Eric Taino of UCLA, 6-3, 6-4, to advance. Wolters beat George Bastl, 6-4, 7-5, in his semifinal.

Wolters also will be in the doubles final with teammate Paul Goldstein when they take on Taino and his UCLA teammate Alex Decret at 2 p.m.

Wolters and Goldstein defeated another UCLA tandem, Kevin Kim and Eric Lin, 6-3, 6-3, to advance.

Bob Bryan and his twin brother, Mike, had the crowd behind them in their doubles semifinal, but that wasn’t enough as they lost to Taino and Decret, 6-2, 6-3.

In the Pac-10 women’s tournament, Vicky Maes of Arizona will play Julie Scott of Stanford in the final.

In the Big West women’s team tournament, sixth-seeded Idaho upset second-seeded Long Beach State, 5-4, to advance to today’s final against top-seeded Boise State. The championship for all the potatoes starts at noon.

In the Pac-10 invitational portion of the tournament, Geoff Abrams of Stanford reached the finals with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Fernando Samayoa of USC. He will play his teammate, Charles Hoeveler, at 9:30 a.m. In the doubles, Samayoa and Akram Zaman of USC will face Abrams and Grant Elliott of Stanford.

Joseph Gilbert of Sunny Hills and now Boise State lost in the men’s independent college semifinals, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, to Cory Guy of UC Santa Barbara.
