Rain Washes Out Talladega Race, Which Is Rescheduled to May 10
A long weekend in Alabama ended with no Winston Cup race after rain Monday washed out the Winston 500 at Talladega Superspeedway for the second day in a row.
The race was rescheduled for May 10, a Saturday, because that is the next available open weekend on the NASCAR schedule and May 11 is Mother’s Day, which the series avoids.
After rain had washed out the race Sunday, drivers returned to the track Monday and, for a while, it seemed the race might be run. Cars turned three laps in an effort to dry out the 2.66-mile circuit, but after another downpour it was decided that it would be impossible to race.
NASCAR’s policy is to run when possible on the next clear day, but the series moves on to Sears Point in Sonoma, Calif., for this Sunday’s race, and it was decided that the time needed in transit would prohibit running at Talladega today.
