Camarillo Rallies to Bring Down Thousand Oaks

Share

Just when it seemed Camarillo High was going to pack it in against Thousand Oaks ace Jennifer Sharron on Tuesday, the Scorpions played like the contenders they are supposed to be.

Camarillo overcame a two-run deficit with a five-run fourth inning and continued the onslaught for a 7-4 victory over the Lancers in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks Community Park.

The Scorpions (11-6, 7-2 in league play), who haven’t been sharp since their Southern Section Division I championship appearance last year, pulled into a first-place tie with Thousand Oaks (15-3, 7-2).

Sharron (12-3), a left-hander headed to Notre Dame on scholarship, struck out eight of the first 10 batters she faced.

But after Sharron struck out Brooke Rutschman to lead off the fourth, the tide turned--like a groundswell.

Jill Borchard reached base on an error, Kortney Edge singled up the middle and Jessica Mendoza’s single scored Borchard for the first run. And the Scorpions were just getting started.

Cindy Ball ripped a line drive to right-center to drive in Edge, and Mendoza scored when center fielder Shelly Teverbaugh bobbled and dropped the ball to give Camarillo the lead, 3-2.

The Scorpions added two more on a single by Amanda Buttell and Allie Taverner’s RBI ground out.

With Camarillo leading, 7-3, Teverbaugh homered to lead off the bottom of the fifth.

Teverbaugh drove in the Lancers’ first run in the third with a triple to right-center field. She tried to stretch the hit into a home run, but was thrown out at the plate by shortstop Rutschman.

However, Teverbaugh was allowed to score when the umpire ruled third baseman Mendoza obstructed the base path.

Ball (7-3) allowed five hits, struck out seven and walked one.

Sharron allowed seven hits, struck out 10 and walked none.
