Oxnard Police Chief Honored for Leadership

The California Assn. of Leadership Programs awarded its Distinguished Leadership Award to Oxnard Police Chief Harold Hurtt.

Hurtt was honored for his ongoing participation in community service and for helping found the Ventura County Leadership Academy. Formed in 1994 as a United Way of Ventura County program, the academy helps develop leaders who will enhance the quality of life in the county.

Student Chosen for Ambassador Program Collin Lieberg, a sophomore at Rio Mesa High School, has been chosen as a delegate for the People to People Student Ambassador Program. Collin will travel with about 30 other delegates to France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic for 21 days during the summer to meet with international student delegations.

The student ambassador program was founded in the 1950s under the Eisenhower administration. Its mission is to promote world peace by encouraging young people to learn firsthand about each other’s countries, customs, histories and cultures.

Art Guild Scholarship Winners Announced The Westlake Village Art Guild announced the winners of its annual Scholarship Show for high school seniors. First place winners received a $400 scholarship; second place, $200; third place, $100.

Volunteer Joins Republican Hall of Fame Kay Haley, a longtime Ventura County Republican volunteer and fund-raiser, was inducted into the Ventura County Republican Hall of Fame on Thursday. Former Rep. Bob Lagomarsino and Judge William Clark served as inducting officers. State Sen. Cathie Wright (R-Simi Valley), Assemblyman Brooks Firestone (R-Los Olivos) and Assemblyman Nao Takasugi (R-Oxnard) also made presentations honoring Haley for her community and party involvement.

Scout Council Honors Top Cookie Sellers Tres Condados Girl Scout Council announced that eight of its Girl Scouts, including five from Ventura County, sold more than 1,000 boxes of cookies, making them eligible for the new Cookie Hall of Fame. Ventura County honorees are:

Jamie Wyse and Jessie Wyse of Ventura, Troop #155; Christina Brown and Jenny Mack of Ventura, Troop #695; Lauren Glass of Camarillo, Troop #602. Lauren, who sold 1,200 boxes of cookies during the last fund-raiser, was also honored as the top seller in Ventura County.

The council serves the counties of Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.
