SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

In a victory for jockeys looking for sponsorship opportunities, Breathe Right nasal strips Saturday will become the first product to officially have its logo displayed on a jockey’s clothing in a nationally televised race.

The agreement is among the Suffolk Downs racetrack, where the Massachusetts Handicap will be held, Breathe Right owner CNS Inc. and jockey Shane Sellers.

To date, jockeys have been hindered by state and track regulations from striking such deals.

In addition to paying Sellers a sponsorship fee for wearing a 3-by-2-inch patch on his right legging, CNS is paying Suffolk Downs for racetrack advertising and the right to distribute samples of the nasal strips to track patrons. No figures were disclosed.

Earlier this month, CNS paid a sponsorship fee to Sellers and several other jockeys to wear the strips at the Kentucky Derby. No logo was displayed.

Sellers will be riding the 1996 3-year-old champion Skip Away. The race will be televised live on ESPN and has a purse of $300,000.
