Bob Goen, co-host of the syndicated “Entertainment Tonight,” has been gearing up for this weekend’s Bob Goen / Red Robin Celebrity Golf Classic at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“It’s something I’m real proud of,” said Goen, 42. (Proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.) “I raise a lot of money for the kids, and we have just the best time.”

He’s not quite as proud of his handicap, though. “I’m about a 12, but I can tell you that I’m probably the worst 12 you’d ever want to be teamed up with.”

Question: Haven’t you been hitting the ball every day?

Answer: No, I wish, although things might change. I joined the Lakeside Country Club [in Burbank], so now I will probably be out at the golf course maybe three times a week, hopefully.

Q: In a cart or walking?

A: I’d always been the kind of golfer who was in a cart and with a cigar--not there for the physical aspects, but just for the camaraderie. But now that I’m at a club where you can have a caddy and you can walk, that’s going to change. It’s not aerobics and it’s nothing that’s going to give me any bulk, but it keeps me limber and it keeps me outside.

Q: Do you ever exercise indoors?

A: At home I’ve got a HealthRider and if I can get eight or 10 minutes on that thing, it’s a reasonable sweat a couple times a week. It certainly allays the guilt. And I’ve got a Versiclimber and you can break a big sweat in a hurry. That seems to take care of it--and, you know, holding my stomach in public.

Q: Anything else before we go on to food?

A: I try to get in a racquetball game every week or so. Now, that’s the one workout where I do break a sweat--the one thing that makes me feel like I can eat anything that night.

Q: Do you?

A: My problem has been that since I was a kid I’ve always had an enormous appetite. That hasn’t changed much since I’ve gotten older, but the results of it have changed. I just have to be cautious about what I eat so that I can eat as much of it as I want. We’ll usually broil up a piece of fish, have a salad and a big baked potato. We’ve got a 2-year-old son at home so there’s not a lot of time to cook. If there’s a frozen dinner available we’ll heat it up. I’ve probably had to fight my weight more since my son was born than any time in my life just because it changes your lifestyle.

Q: Do you have to fight it at breakfast?

A: I’m not much of a breakfast eater--orange juice and a power bar. And lunch more than likely a salad or a tuna sandwich or a turkey sandwich with low fat yogurt instead of mayonnaise. That’s Bob’s tip of the week.
