Baby Born at Prom; Body Put in Trash
A woman attending her high school prom gave birth in a restroom, left the baby in a trash can and returned to the dance floor with her boyfriend, officials said.
Chaperons and medics tried to resuscitate the full-term baby, but it was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The baby was found Friday night by a maintenance worker, who had been told there was blood on the floor of one toilet stall, said Monmouth County prosecutor John Kaye. “We’re treating it as a potential homicide,” he added.
After giving birth, Kaye said, the 19-year-old woman returned to the ballroom at the Garden Manor catering hall, danced with her boyfriend and even requested a song from the band performing at the prom for Lacey Township High School.
After police identified her as the mother, the woman was taken to Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel, Kaye said. The woman, whose name was not released, remained hospitalized Sunday.
