Venice High’s Championship Science Team Is Honored

School is not yet over, but some students from Venice High were already out partying Thursday--albeit with state senators.

Receiving framed resolutions and hearty applause, the five-member National Science Bowl championship team was honored by senators in Sacramento and members of the state Board of Education, said assistant principal David Holmes.

The hoopla in Sacramento comes one month after Venice erupted in cheers and banners for its hometown team, which captured the national championship for a second consecutive year by beating the photons off 26 other high schools in a battle of science and math mastery.

The back-to-back victory in Chevy Chase, Md., was especially sweet because Venice High School is a language magnet school, said team coach Richard Erdman.

“We’re just very proud of them,” said Rose Sarukian, district coordinator for Sen. Ralph Dills (D-El Segundo), who invited the team to Sacramento for the honor.
