Jamie & the Jury Sing the ‘70s for You : JAMIE & THE JURY “Bridge of Words” Rocktopia (** 1/2)

Share

“Bridge of Words” exudes professionalism, as Jamie Browning, a veteran Orange County musician, surrounds himself with highly credentialed players and singers but always remains at the forefront. He’s a solid if not distinctive singer, and as a guitarist he’s a master of tonal and stylistic variety.

The CD doesn’t begin promisingly, echoing the slick side of ‘70s rock. Browning does better when he burrows deeper into roots-informed styles. A playful Elvis Presley tribute, “Paralyzed,” grounds things in good, old, scratchy rockabilly turf, with Browning comfortable in the Elvis role and Bill Medley and the Was (Not Was) alumni of Sweet Pea Atkinson and Sir Harry Bowens filling in as deputized Jordanaires. Other notables who help out are Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo, session percussionist Luis Conte and ‘70s pop singer Emitt Rhodes.

Browning’s songs trace familiar themes of romantic upsets and idealistic yearning. “Bridge of Words” lacks the individuality to be really striking, but most of it offers the solid, familiar pleasures that a versatile, well-schooled pop pro can provide.--M.B.
