Janeth Arcain scored 23 points Tuesday night as the Houston Comets beat the Phoenix Mercury, 70-55, in their WNBA home opener before 16,285, the largest U.S. crowd to watch a women’s professional basketball game.
The previous record was 16,102 at Sunday’s game in Phoenix between the Mercury and the Charlotte Sting.
Leading, 34-24, at halftime, the Comets (2-0) saw their edge cut to 46-44 with 8:51 to go before pulling away from the Mercury (1-1).
