Giants Blow Away Padres in 14-7 Win

Barring the unforeseen, the Padres will get something of a break tonight when they open a four-game series in Dodger Stadium.

They will escape San Francisco’s wind.

And nobody will be happier than Rickey Henderson.

The San Diego left fielder had a miserable Wednesday afternoon, watching Barry Bonds’ RBI single drop in front of him in the first inning, J.T. Snow’s three-run double fall safely in the second and Bonds’ double go off his glove in the fourth of a 14-7 loss to the Giants.

Henderson was heckled throughout the game, including getting several mock standing ovations. But he made a shoestring catch of a liner by Bonds with two on and two outs in the fifth inning, and went three for five, with three singles and a run scored.

“The wind just knocked the ball around. There’s nothing you can do about Mother Nature,” Henderson said. “It was swirling, swirling real bad. It was just one of those Candlestick days.”

Snow drove in four runs and Bonds scored four for the Giants.

Snow’s bases-loaded, three-run double in the second was a popup that dropped between Henderson and shortstop Chris Gomez. Snow added an RBI double during a six-run eighth.

Bonds, Darryl Hamilton and Stan Javier had RBI singles, Jose Vizcaino and Damon Berryhill had two-run singles and Jeff Kent drove in two runs for the Giants, who have won eight of 11.

The 14 runs also were a season high for San Francisco.

“With this ballpark and the wind, you never know,” Snow said. “I popped up a pitch with the bases loaded and the next thing I know it’s in there. Other teams don’t like playing here, and we can definitely use that to our advantage.”

Glenallen Hill had similar struggles in right field for the Giants. He dropped a fly ball and had another go over his head. He went 0 for 4 and is three for 39 in his last 11 games.

Tony Gwynn went two for three with two walks and enters the series with the Dodgers batting .398 for San Diego, which is 0-6-3 in its last nine series.
