Riordan to Be Inaugurated--Twice
It turns out that Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan will have a faux inauguration Monday. His real swearing-in will take place privately today--just in case he gets into an accident and can’t make the Monday gala on the City Hall steps.
“This is probably being over-dramatic, but you never know,” said City Clerk J. Michael Carey, who will administer the oath of office in the private ceremony scheduled this morning.
“We’ve done it this way for many years,” Carey added, to make certain that, no matter what happens, the mayor gets officially sworn in before a city charter-imposed July 1 deadline. If not, the City Council president would have to act as mayor.
It is a busy time of year for Carey, who said he usually swears in all elected officials in advance of their ceremonial inaugurations. He said that, as of Thursday afternoon, he had already sworn in quite a few council members and the city attorney.
“I think I have one council member left to go and [City Controller Rick] Tuttle and the mayor,” he said.
