Newport Beach’s Jurgensen Leads by 4 at State Open

Steve Jurgensen of Newport Beach will take a four-shot lead into today’s final round of the California State Open at Indian Wells Country Club and Resort.

Jurgensen completed third-round play Thursday with an eight-under-par 64 for a three-day total of 198. Jason Gore of Valencia (204) is in third place after his six-under-par 66, and second-round leader Joon Lee of Fullerton (206) dropped into a three-way tie for fifth after a one-over 73. Also in contention is Brad Greer of Huntington Beach (206).

Third-seeded Ryan Moore of Fullerton defeated unseeded Erin Carroll of Ventura, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round at the Southern California Junior Tennis Sectionals at Los Caballeros Country Club in Fountain Valley.

In another match in the boys’ 18 main draw, fourth-seeded Chase Exon of Irvine beat unseeded Dillon Ruby of Westlake Village, 6-1, 6-1.

In the girls’ 18 main draw, fourth-seeded Faye DeVera of Cypress beat unseeded Lindsey Green of El Cajon, 5-7, 6-0, 6-3. Unseeded Katey Becker of Orange defeated sixth-seeded Candice Fuchs of San Diego, 1-6, 7-6, 6-4.

First-round leader Sue Ewart of Seal Beach shot 81 to fall to fifth place at 154 in the championship flight of the Long Beach Women’s City Golf Championship at El Dorado. San Pedro’s Dianne Yelovich shot 74 to take the lead at 149.

Ten of the 11 Orange County teams in the Snickers U.S. Youth Far West Regional Soccer Championship advanced to the semifinals.

Dana Point-based Southern California Blues won in the under 19 girls, under 18 girls, under 17 girls and under 15 girls. Other county winners were North Huntington Beach Black in under 14 girls and under 14 boys, Irvine SC Strikers in under 13 girls and under 13 boys, West Orange County United Riptide in under 17 girls and Mission Viejo Mirage in under 16 girls.

Pitcher Jonathon Rouwenhorst of Brethren Christian has agreed to play baseball at Biola, school officials said.

Rouwenhorst, 17, who was named to The Times All-Orange County first team, won more games (14) and had more strikeouts (188) than any county pitcher last season. Rouwenhorst batted .476 with five home runs and 44 runs batted in.

In addition, Biola announced that Yorba Linda resident John Verhoeven was hired as the school’s baseball coach.

Verhoeven left Loyola Marymount, where he spent the past season as pitching coach.
