Boisclair Advances at Nationals

Erin Boisclair of Agoura Hills won two matches in the USTA Girls’ 18 national tennis championships at Almaden Valley Athletic Club in San Jose on Tuesday.

Boisclair defeated Susie Hiniker of Ann Arbor, Mich., 6-0, 6-2, in a second-round singles match.

She teamed with Jessica Leinhoff of Cooper City, Fla., to defeat Katherine Dougherty of Elliott City, Md., and Mily Kannarkat of Virginia Beach, Fla., 6-2, 6-0, in the second round of doubles play.

Helena Horak of Westlake Village lost in singles and doubles.

Leah Killen of Detroit defeated Horak, 6-1, 6-3. In doubles, Amy Frisch of Crescent Springs, Ky., and Cecily Dubusker of Lakewood, Ohio, beat Horak and Erica Tower of La Mesa, 6-2, 6-0.

BASEBALL

Jorge Piedra, who played at Notre Dame High and for the Van Nuys East American Legion team, signed with the Dodgers.

Piedra, a three-sport athlete who graduated from Notre Dame in June, played right field and batted .481 from the leadoff spot with nine doubles, four triples, two home runs, 19 runs batted in and 40 runs scored for the Van Nuys East American Legion team.

“I was all set to go to USC, and I wouldn’t have went to the Dodgers if it wasn’t a substantial figure,” Piedra said. “They basically bought out USC.”

Royal High middle blocker Ryan Denihan has made a commitment to Cal State Northridge..

Ole Kaven, 6-foot-7 opposite hitter from Germany who had committed to Northridge, accepted a scholarship to Hawaii.

MOTOR RACING

Charles Utts of Camarillo finished third and Tommy Fry of Simi Valley was fourth in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series Late-model Division main event Saturday night at Mesa Marin Raceway.

Cory Kruseman of Ventura finished fourth in the sprint-car division main event race Saturday night at Ventura Raceway.

SOCCER

Wes Smith, track and field coach at L.A. Baptist High for five years, has been hired as boys’ soccer coach at the school.

Smith will also coach cross-country after taking a one-year hiatus from the sport to pursue an athletic training degree.
