Weezer Plays Special Benefit

Weezer proved itself a class act during a sold-out benefit at the Palace in Hollywood on Saturday night. The band gave an emotional performance in tribute to Carli and Mykel Allan, the sister and brother who ran its fan club, and their sister Trysta--all of whom were killed in a car accident last month. Not a dry eye remained after the Allans’ father gave an emotional thank you speech.

Following the show, which included a guest spot by No Doubt drummer Adrian Young and opening performances by That Dog and Black Market Flowers, Weezer front-man Rivers Cuomo spent nearly an hour talking to fans and signing autographs outside the venerable venue. . . .

Jamie Brown, the whiz behind such L.A. cover band sensations as the Boogie Knights, M-80s and Metal Shop, has created Dr. Funkenstein, an over-the-top, costumed funk band that is making its L.A. debut Aug. 22 at the Viper Room and Aug. 24 at the Aftershock in Studio City. Expect sky-high platform shoes, possibly containing goldfish. . . .

Saturday’s Troubadour performance by Slick 50, a new local rock quartet, hinted at big things to come for the young band, which also played the Roxy on Tuesday with much aplomb. . . .

212 Soul, a new hip-hop club on Saturday nights at Boardner’s in Hollywood, is packing ‘em in, with guest deejays ranging from the Pharcyde’s Fat Lip to Evil E. Hosts Jimi Jam, Q-BWOY and DJ White Lighting plan to include live music shortly.
