The Seattle Mariners, who traded away prized left fielder Jose Cruz Jr. three weeks ago for bullpen help, acquired outfielder Roberto Kelly from the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night for a player to be named.

Kelly, 32, was batting .287 with five home runs and 37 runs batted in in 75 games for the Twins. He will join the Mariners in Seattle today for a game against Cleveland.

Oakland Athletic slugger Jose Canseco, who has not played since July 31 because of lower-back spasms, was activated from the disabled list. To make room, outfielder Patrick Lennon (shoulder bursitis) was placed on the 15-day disabled list. . . . Reliever Todd Jones and the Detroit Tigers agreed to a $5.7-million, two-year contract extension with a team option for 2000 that could make the deal worth $9 million.
