A dispute between roadside vendors erupted into gunfire Saturday, when a 29-year-old Westminster man shot his competitor after an argument, police said.

About 4:50 p.m. the two fruits and vegetables vendors met on the 7100 block of Fenway Drive and began fighting, police said.

“It sounds like they were competitors, and one guy was upset over it,” said Police Lt. Phil Marshall. The younger man pulled a handgun, shot the 47-year-old Westminster man several times and ran off, he said.

The gunman remains at large. Police are withholding the victim’s name until his family can be notified, Marshall said.

He was taken to UCI Medical Center and is expected to survive.
