A Cook County (Ill.) sheriff’s deputy had to surrender his badge and gun after being indicted in the point-shaving scheme at Arizona State.

Joseph Mangiamele, 35, of Arlington Heights and his father, Dominic Mangiamele, 61, of Mount Prospect, Ill., were among four people indicted Friday in what federal officials said was one of the nation’s worst sports gambling scandals.

Two former Arizona State players, Stevin “Hedake” Smith and Isaac Burton Jr., pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges, admitting they took bribes to fix four games in 1994. The indictment accuses the Mangiameles of helping raise money for the bribes and for bets on the games.
